About Us The story of Berkley is deeply rooted in the idea of the American Dream. It's about hard work, struggle, and tough times, as well as building partnerships to accomplish goals. However, Berkley's story isn't just about Berkley Bedell; it's also about the dedicated co-workers and loyal customers who were equally willing to take risks.
The journey began in June of 1937 in Spirit Lake, Iowa, when 16-year old Berkley Bedell used 50 USD from his paper route earnings to start a business selling hand-tied flies to fishing tackle shops and vacationing anglers. With materials sourced from the family dog and backyard chickens, he crafted flies to attract local bluegill and bass. The Berkley Fly Co. was born, and by 1939, Berkley was employing several area girls to hand-make flies, silkworm gut, and cable wire leaders in their homes. The business quickly outgrew Berkley's parent's basement and living room, and he expanded into the second floor of the local grocery store.
After attending state university and serving in the Army Air Corps, Berk returned to Spirit Lake in 1945 to start Berkley and Company, which focused on cable wire leaders. He then began developing nylon-coated wire for use in fishing leaders and later nylon monofilament fishing lines. The company's breakthrough innovation, Trilene, was soon discovered through ongoing experimentation.
In 1959, Berkley introduced Trilene, which quickly gained popularity among fishermen. This success marked the beginning of Berkley's four decades of great growth. The company entered into the rod business in the 1960s, leading to international expansion in the 1970s. The 1980s saw the introduction of soft plastic baits, and from the 1990s to the present, there have been significant technology improvements in all Berkley products.
Since the beginning, Berkley has devoted significant resources to research and development, resulting in countless product innovations such as Berkley Trilene, the Lightning Rod, PowerBait, FireLine, and more recently Gulp!? and Gulp! Alive. These products have been developed with the goal of providing quality and effective fishing equipment for dedicated anglers.
