In June of 1937, 16-year old Berkley Bedell used $50 from his paper route earnings to start a business selling hand-tied flies in Spirit Lake, Iowa. Using hair from the family dog and feathers from backyard chickens, Berkley crafted flies to attract local bluegill and bass. The Berkley Fly Co. was founded and soon outgrew Berk's parents' basement and living room. He expanded to the second floor of the local grocery store.

After attending the state university and serving in the Army Air Corps, Berk returned to Spirit Lake in 1945 to start Berkley and Company. The business focus was on cable wire leaders, but Berk became interested in extruding nylon monofilament fishing line. After receiving a license from DuPont, Berk developed the equipment to produce nylon. This led to the company's breakthrough innovation - Trilene.

In 1959, Berkley introduced Trilene and it was well-received by fishermen, leading to successful launch. In the following decades, Berkley entered into the rod business, expanded internationally, and introduced soft plastic baits. Significant technology improvements were made in all of Berkley's products in the 1990s through today, including Trilene, the Lightning Rod, PowerBait, FireLine, as well as Gulp!? and Gulp! Alive.

Throughout its history, Berkley has committed significant resources to research and development, resulting in countless product innovations. Today, Berkley offers a wide range of fishing products, including Trilene fishing line, soft baits, fishing rods, and various accessories. The company continues to uphold its vision of hard work, partnership, and innovation, rooted in the American Dream.
